Taj Lake Palace *****

The Taj Lake Palace floats on the calm surface of Lake Pichola and was built in 1740 as a summer retreat, taking advantage of the cooling lake breezes. The Taj group took over in the Sixties, and the hotel has since become standard postcard (and Bond film) material. This is, after all, a Taj hotel, and though the location is unconventional and wonderfully secluded, it is a world-class luxury hotel. Taj Lake Palace is a 40 minute drive from Udaipur Airport.

Devi Garh ***** -

Nestled in the aravali hills, the 18th century Devi Garh palace in the village of Delwara, forms one of the three main passes into the valley of Udaipur. Shiv Niwas Palace ***** -

An old-world Indian classic, Shiv Niwas stands within the walls of Udaipur’s City Palace — once a guest house for royal visitors, today it’s a different sort of guest house, a small hotel (thirty-six rooms and suites) that’s nonetheless very big on luxury. Standard rooms, those with the city views, are a little more contemporary, and as such a little less inspired. It’s in the suites that Shiv Niwas really shines, the interiors an aristocratic fantasy, the terraces looking out over the water, one, the Imperial suite, with ornate checkerboard floors and a working fountain right in the bedroom.
